Fittest School Challenge

Students' nutrition knowledge
increases 125%

  • Mr. Tone Visits
  • Fittest School Challenge

The culminating event to Operation Tone-Up is the Fittest School Challenge. Each participating school will be allowed to send a team of 8 students to represent their school at the Challenge.

The students are chosen by their teachers. All teams attending the Challenge will compete in two-events and will be graded as a team. The two events are:

The Exercise Challenge and the Know Your Nutrients Challenge.

EXERCISE CHALLENGE

20 minute non-stop aerobic workout. Judges will independently grade the students as a team in the following areas:

  • PROPER FORM

Students should be able to execute exercises using proper form.

  • ENDURANCE LEVEL

The students’ endurance should remain the same throughout the Exercise Challenge to receive a high score. Students that show a lot of energy in the first couple of sets, then little to no energy in the last couple of sets, will lose points.

  • TRANSITIONS

Should be smooth, with little to no rest between exercises

Note: 2 Bonus Points will be given to teams that have a teacher and/or administrator that can complete the entire Exercise Challenge with them. (Max. 2 points)

NUTRITION CHALLENGE

Teams compete against each other to answer questions based on the weekly Nutrition & Exercise lessons they have studied over the last 10 weeks.

Note: Questions can come from anywhere on Knowledge Island. BUT, most of the questions will come from the “Basics” at Nutrient Lagoon and Workout Point

  • SPEED & KNOWLEDGE

Students should be able to execute exercises using proper form.

  • TEAM CHAT

Each team is allowed ONE Team Chat to talk amongst themselves to answer a question. The team member must raise his/her hand BEFORE the specified time runs out in order to be granted the Team Chat. The team is then given a specified time to quietly discuss and come up with the answer to the question.

  • FLEX YOUR MUSCLE

Each team has ONE opportunity to Flex Their Muscle to earn double the point value! To activate, the team member needs to express that they want to Flex Their Muscle before the question is asked.

NOTE: If the student answers the question correctly they receive double the point value. BUT, if they miss the question, they LOSE 5 points.

PREPARING FOR THE FITTEST SCHOOL CHALLENGE

TEAM TRAINING TIPS

Have your team and alternates perform the Assignment 4 Exercise Plan (20 Minute Workout) at least 3-days each week and have them focus on the following 3 areas:

  • PROPER FORM – As the students are performing each exercise, make sure they are using proper form. The more they practice each week the more endurance they will develop to maintain proper form.
  • PACING – This is an endurance workout, which means you need to do a set of exercises for a certain period of time without stopping. The more the students practice as a team the more comfortable they will be during the Challenge. NOTE: To help the students pace themselves, have them form a circle large enough to have one student in the middle for all the other team members to follow. Rotate team members to the middle for each of the different exercises to help set the pace
  • TRANSITION BETWEEN EXERCISES – Make sure the students transition between each exercise without resting. Again, the more they practice doing the workouts each week the more endurance they will develop and the smoother the transitions will be.

Next have the team play the Catch A Wave game as often as possible in either single-player or 2-player mode (this can be done in the classroom with the entire classroom) to become familiar with the questions and answers. Many of the questions used during the Nutrition Challenge will come from the Catch A Wave game.

SCORING
  • Both events have a maximum of 225 points for a combined maximum total of 450 points. The team with the most points WINS!
  • 2 Bonus Points will be given for each teacher/administrator who completes the exercise challenge with their school’s team during the Fittest School Challenge (maximum of 10 points possible).
